V.i. Labs’ New CodeArmor Intelligence Anti-Piracy
Solution “Maps” Route to Unlicensed Software
ISVs use enhanced reporting, geo-location data and Google Maps capabilities to
identify businesses using pirated software and recover license revenue
Waltham, Mass. — May 21, 2009 - V.i. Laboratories, (“V.i. Labs”), a leading
provider of piracy business intelligence and software protection solutions, has
upgraded its software anti-piracy platform with new features that help Independent
Software Vendors (ISVs) quickly determine who is using their stolen unlicensed software
and where they are located. Available now, CodeArmor® Intelligence includes expanded reporting
capabilities, Google Maps integration, advanced data filtering and simplified integration
with third-party applications.
CodeArmor Intelligence has new advanced reporting capabilities that allow ISVs to
maximize data collection from environments running pirated software. Once piracy
is detected, multiple layers of reporting ensure ISVs can successfully identify
businesses using unlicensed software anywhere in the world. After the data is collected
at a gateway server, geo-location information can be automatically added and reported
to the CodeArmor Intelligence reporting plug-in for Salesforce.com to view the location
of the infringing business through Google Maps.
“Customers are reporting thousands of actionable infringement leads once CodeArmor
Intelligence is integrated into their applications,” said Victor DeMarines, vice
president of Products for V.i. Labs. “Real businesses are relying on the availability
of pirated software and have grown accustomed to downloading and using the most
current releases. Now the ISVs have a way to identify them and recover license revenue.”
“Many organizations still believe that their piracy issue is ad hoc and the companies
who use pirated software would not otherwise pay for it,” said Victor DeMarines,
vice president of Products for V.i. Labs. “It’s clear from today’s research that
the best chance for revenue recovery efforts, ISVs need to focus on who is using
the pirated software, rather than focusing on who is pirating their products. Given
the increase of global piracy and specific data we see from our customers, we advise
ISVs to turn their attention to piracy as a lead generation process and a way to
recover revenue from the businesses that are ultimately making a profit at the ISVs’
expense.”
Other features include powerful gateway server filtering that uses rules to modify,
delete or log data before sending it to the reporting interface. It uses regular
expressions to create rules to focus on what data gets reported or selectively exclude
certain data based on geography. In addition, an enhanced software development kit
(SDK) provides sample applications to simplify integrating CodeArmor Intelligence
into applications, including new piracy detection logic. Support for Microsoft Visual
Studio 2008 as well as 2005 applications is also included.
Introduced in August 2008, CodeArmor Intelligence is the first turn-key piracy detection
and reporting system that integrates with existing ISV applications and uses Salesforce.com
for reporting. It offers a dynamic method to collect, filter and report on the use
of pirated applications and create leads for sales, compliance or legal teams. Currently,
ISVs rely on licensing, activation or home-grown approaches to gather data, which
are easily detected, bypassed or disabled by piracy groups. These home grown systems
also lack filters, advance reporting processes, platform support, and are unable
to organize and report the information in a way that can be used to develop a piracy
lead.
How CodeArmor Intelligence Works
CodeArmor Intelligence adds piracy threat detection and reporting to ISVs’ applications
through a simple integration procedure with minimal impact to the software release
process and IT infrastructure. Legal use of the software does not trigger this functionality
so it does not impact the licensed customer base. Once the ISV’s software is deployed
and piracy is detected, CodeArmor Intelligence communicates the infringement through
advanced reporting technology to multiple Web gateway servers within the ISV facility.
The gateway filters and automatically augments the infringement data with geo-location
and business profile data using Data-as-a-Service partners. Infringement data is
then sent to a piracy dashboard built on the Salesforce.com cloud platform. The
data is accessible only within the ISV’s instance of the Salesforce.com reporting
interface, enabling legal, product management, or other users to view a piracy lead
dashboard, report on non-compliant organizations and export infringement data. The
Web gateway component also allows vendors to integrate infringement data directly
into their internal CRM system. Organizations can either act on the data directly
to recover revenue, or enlist channel partners or legal services from the SIIA or Business Software
Alliance (BSA) to act on the leads.
Availability/Pricing
CodeArmor Intelligence is available immediately. Pricing is based on an annual subscription
starting at $50,000.
